Last week, I wrote about the lunar new year and the proliferation of all kinds of Chinese charms which supposedly bring in good luck and fortune for the year ahead.

Some ‘lucky charms’ toxic, says group

Those lucky charms may not be so lucky, after all. Environmental watchdog EcoWaste Coalition on Sunday advised people to be careful in handling feng shui charms, claiming that 14 out of 30 samples it bought from Binondo District in Manila were found to contain chemicals like arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead and mercury that were “above levels of concern.”

Not to rain on the Chinese New Year parade, but an environmental watchdog reported toxic materials in some charms and ornaments two days before Chinese New Year rolls along on Monday. Ironically, with 2012 being the Year of the Water Dragon, the highest volume of lead was found in dragon figurines.
